A BIG CHANGE TO EMERALD CAVE

I am have been tossing an idea around for the last few weeks about the target audience for THE KEEPERS OF THE EMERALD CAVE.... I don't think it's a Young Adult story!

I really think it's Middle Grade, but I was worried about the age of Denim, Ravenna and Calliope. I had been looking around at guidelines for MG, and the target audience is 5th- and 6th-graders, but Denim is 15. So there are a few things I could do - I could knock down their ages a few years, make Denim 13 or 14, with Ravenna 11 or 12, or leave them the ages they, just keep the book free of the usual teen angst found in YA today. All of that bores me. (Yes, I am a Twilight fan, but trust me, that is ALL about Taylor Lautner and his pack of *HAWT* wolf-boys, and nothing about vampires or any of Bella's issues!)

I like the adventure EMERALD CAVE brings to the table. Good guys, bad guys, camping under the stars. Exploring caves, swimming with magical critters, busting down rock walls with his bare hands. It's about a boy, but it's also about his family and what it means when a family works together to get the job done.

Oh, and it's about emeralds. My favorite. *grin*
